Luminous Books is a pop-up shop situated just off Kingsland Road, in the George Polke Gallery. It is only open for a couple of hours on Saturdays, giving visitors a small window of time during which they can browse the shelves of this one-of-a-kind literary outlet that sells rare and unusual second-hand books.

Artist Louisa Bailey is the woman behind the project, which started out as a single shelf of just 20 paperbacks. She curates as if it were an art exhibition, with books screened for both their literary and aesthetic value before being allowed on the shelves. Bailey quotes her favourite authors as Jorge Luis Borges, Italo Calvino, Virginia Woolf, Miranda July and Bertrand Russell, which gives you some idea of the quality of literature you will find at the shop.

This is for those of you disillusioned by chain bookstores, e-books, online shopping and cut-priced best sellers in the supermarket. For those who value the book as an object, who want to read beautiful prose and who dont need to browse shelves alphabetically. And, of course, for those of you who just want to go somewhere a bit different.
